What this check covers

This free check follows contractor safety management as a chain from approval to close-out: prequalification on risk-based health and safety requirements rather than a generic checklist, communicating scope, site hazards and client requirements before work starts, verifying the training, competence, medical fitness and authorisations of the people doing the work, reviewing risk assessments, method statements and permits for the actual work rather than for presence, inducting contractor workers into current site hazards and emergency arrangements, being able to stop site access when documents or authorisations are missing or expired, a named person responsible for monitoring the work while it happens, declared and controlled subcontractors, reviewing contractor risk information when scope, team, equipment or conditions change, and closing findings and using them in future approval decisions. Ten questions, four safety-critical: competence verification, stopping access, live supervision and change management. The basis is the Occupational Health and Safety Act. It is written for the client, principal contractor or facilities manager who appoints contractors. A compliant-looking contractor pack can still hide uncontrolled work, and this check tests the whole chain.
