What this course covers

This free online course covers the external, pre-use and planned visual inspections of portable electrical tools: drills, grinders, extension leads and similar equipment. You learn to spot visible safety-critical defects on casings, cables, plugs and guards, to take unsafe equipment out of use, and to recognise when a tool needs electrical testing or repair by a competent person rather than a visual check. It is written for the person appointed under the Electrical Machinery Regulations to inspect portable electrical tools, and for supervisors who issue them. Sixteen modules with 32 activities lead to a 48-question knowledge check; you need at least 39 correct, including all 16 safety-critical answers, to print the certificate of completion. Awareness only, non-accredited; it does not qualify anyone to test or repair electrical equipment.
