Why this matters

A construction file should describe the site that exists today.

The current Construction Regulations require contractors to maintain a documented H&S plan and site file; the value comes from keeping those controls connected to actual work, people, equipment and changing conditions.

About this check

What this check covers

This free check tells a contractor whether the health and safety file for a site would stand up to the client’s or principal contractor’s review. Twelve yes/no questions cover four areas: the plan and specification, appointments and competence, risk and work controls, and the evidence kept in the site file. It is measured against the Construction Regulations, 2014, which remain in force; the 2025 draft is not the basis. Three questions are safety-critical and are flagged in the result on their own: whether the risk assessments are current and specific to the work, whether equipment inspection, testing and operator certification records are present, and whether there is a site-specific fall protection plan where people can fall. Answers are processed in your browser and are not sent to us. The result is a percentage with the priority areas listed. It is a screening tool for the person who owns the file, not a statutory audit. Our guide on what goes in a health and safety file explains each item in more depth, and we prepare site-specific files where a client’s specification calls for one.
